XI. The Nine Situations
In the The Nine Situations Sun Tzu explains that a successful military campaign depends on a commander’s ability to understand and adapt to the nine different situations that may arise on the battlefield. The successful commander must be able to recognize and respond to these challenges in order to achieve victory.
To apply the concept of the Nine Situations to their business, a business person should use this framework to analyze their market or industry, identifying the specific type of terrain they are operating in and how this might impact their strategy. For example, if a business is operating in a highly competitive and enclosed market, they might need to focus on differentiation and innovation in order to break through and gain a competitive advantage. Alternatively, if a business is operating in an open and unencumbered market, they might need to focus on speed and agility in order to outmaneuver their competitors. By understanding the terrain they are operating in, a business person can develop a strategic plan that is better suited to the specific challenges and opportunities of their market or industry.
